Episode three of the "On Playing With" miniseries is focused on playing video games with kids, and for Caleb it is specifically about playing games with his oldest kid, Charlee. The two of them have played games before, but in the last few months Charlee took ownership of her first game, taking the time to learn how to play it and beat it herself, and it caught dad off guard a bit. Come listen as he describes what it is like to watch your kid become passionate about something you hold a great deal of passion for yourself.
On episode two of the "On Playing With" series I focus in on my family's long running family game night. But not before digging into some of the history that brought us to being capable of having family game nights. There is overlap in some ways between this conversation and the last episode. I also start to dig into what it's like to teach someone how to play games, which is actually a lot harder than you might think it is.
This episode is focused, as the title suggests, on the ever-evolving social structure of playing games with my group of friends, how that group changes (for good and bad), how the games constantly change, and how balance is a dish best served carefully. There are good times and bad times bundled up in this experience. And it's an experience I wouldn't trade, though I do sometimes wish I could switch it off for a few days.
This time we dive into a bunch of game updates that have come out in the last few weeks, including Helldivers 2 and The Finals. We talk about what it means to balance a PvE game, we lament the drought of RTS games, and then by extension Star Wars games. Ryan and Caleb also dig into their time with the newly released Lightyear Frontier. It's a great time! Come hang with us!
Ryan’s brother Pat is a constant gaming companion and damn good one at that, but one morning he and Ryan wondered what it would be like if he joined the show. Well now he won't have to wonder. Join the usual suspects as they greet Pat to the group and hang out to hear us almost immediately pivot to Helldivers 2 and have a hard time talking about anything else.
Happy February! Catch up with the TNBS crew this week as Ryan recounts his trip to Europe, just before Caleb goes on his own. The two also dig into Jusant, God of War: Ragnarok's Valhalla DLC, Lamplighter's League, and a bunch more. Come hang with the NerdyBits crew as they get punchy and have a blast.
Happy New Year! Come hang with Caleb and Ryan as they start to think about their games of the year. We also dig into THE FINALS, the new pvp shooter from Embark Studios, the ins and outs of strategy, the interesting choices they've made for cosmetics, how much the Vegas map sucks, and lots more. Ryan also gets into Farming Simulator 22, Caleb is scratching the surface of Lamplighter's League, we discuss getting into the new Avatar game and we wrap with talking about the games we didn't get to last year that we want to get to in the next few months.
Joe makes it back for his third recording just in time to talk about the impending MLB season, the enduring success of MLB The Show, devs reusing assets and animations in games. We also talk about the magic of Dune and its sequel, some upcoming indie projects, and Joe forces Caleb to talk about getting published with Lost in Cult.
